When a Face Lift for Children is Ethical (Is it Ever?)
A very important question needs to be addressed regarding the performance of a face lift on a minor. Is it is it the right thing to do to allow someone under 18 to undergo this type of procedure?
Of course, some people say cosmetic surgery in this instance is perfectly acceptable, and sometimes even necessary, while others think it is completely wrong. People in favor of children receiving a face lift argue the fact that it could help improve that child’s overall outlook on life as well as his or her self-esteem.
People who do not approve of this type of cosmetic procedure say that it provides the child with a counterfeit sense of self worth. They also add that it could alter their perception of them selves for the worst, as well as how they view the world. Worse yet, those who opposite this procedure on children say it could cause them to develop superficial relationships.
Before you decide on this matter, try to anticipate how you would feel if you had to life your whole childhood with a physical deformity. For instance, what if you suffered the embarrassment and/or pain of a cleft lip and palate, misshaped skull, or burn scar?
These unfortunate circumstances could affect your child in a very negative way, in that it could limit his or her ability to interact socially and engage in daily activities. The receipt of a face lift might be necessary for children for one or more of the following reasons:
- Their health depends on it. If a child suffers any type of deformity it could cause chronic pain. If this is the case, the parents or guardians in charge of a child who is suffering in this way might be justified in seeking the right corrective procedure.
- Correct problems caused by a tumor. Certain deformities are caused by tumors, which are potentially fatal. In this case it may not only be beneficial, but also could save a child’s life. The pros and cons of surgery for this reason should be carefully weight, though. Specialists are usually very helpful in this regard.
- To help improve areas affected by sever burns. This of course will help heal pain caused by burning. However, it also could help improve the outer appearance of a child who has been injured as a result of being caught in a fire.
- To remove a highly visible birth defect. One major example is in the event a child suffers from the embarrassing presence of a bruise like birth mark on the face, or other highly visible facial or body mark. This may be a case in which some people might think the child is put under unnecessary risk. However, many people say the risk is worth the possibility that a child will experience a more normal life growing up.
- To remove deformities. In the event that a child has a skull that is shaped a little bit unusual, or for times when that child suffers from a cleft palate a face lift may help. This is another case in which a child might otherwise be teased and put down and this problem could be avoided.
Of course, the advantages and disadvantages of face lifts always need to be evaluated carefully. Furthermore, parents are advised to seek the best professional advice regarding this manner.
